How to store bedding: 6 simple solutions you might not have considered

Maintaining a clutter-free house has been proven to reduce stress and make you happier in your living space. Whether you have a large household, enjoy entertaining guests, or are interested in the benefits of a clutter-free home, it’s important to find a proper place for bedding when you’re not using it.

1. Keep things organised with storage baskets

Storage baskets are a stylish and affordable way to store bedding. Wicker baskets, in particular, fit with most home decor styles and slot neatly in most linen cupboards. They also come in a range of sizes, so you can choose the best fit for the space you’re working with.

If you’re running low on linen cupboard space, an oversized basket kept next to the linen cupboard is a great option for storing items like fitted sheets or small blankets. You can make this wicker storage solution part of your bedroom decor and add a sophisticated rustic style to your space.

2. Stack bedding for compact storage

If you have an excess of spare bedding, linen cupboards can quickly fill up and become disorganised. A quick fix for more compact storage is to stack your bedding using the different shelf heights and take advantage of the vertical space. Pillowcases and flat sheets, for example, work well when stacked together.

You can also store multiple bedding sets by stacking them together on individual shelves. This will not only make it easier to find matching duvet sets, but also to prepare your spare room for the next set of visitors coming to stay in your home.

3. Put bedding on display with an open closet

Bedding that is bright and colourful can be stored on display. An open closet is a great solution for storing bedding that showcases neatly folded and stacked pillowcases and sheets - and adds vibrancy to any room.

If your linen cupboard has spare shelf space, you could also consider storing similar bedding items on each shelf. Having one shelf for fitted sheets and another for flat sheets, for example, will help you store your bedding in an accessible way.

4. Use vacuum-sealed bags to save space

Vacuum-sealed bags are an excellent storage solution for bulky bedding items. Whether you’re rotating your bedding with the seasons or have an excess of bedding for guests, vacuum-sealed bags can help you save space when storing away items that aren’t in use.

We recommend washing your bedding before putting it away inside a vacuum-sealed bag, as well as opening the bag to refold the bedding every so often. You can also use a marker to label the type of bedding inside the bag, so you know which one to get from storage.

5. Make the most of under-bed storage

While linen cupboards are the most popular solution when considering how to store bedding, under-bed storage is another good option for keeping items out of sight - and still easily accessible. Depending on the design of your bed, you can store everything from pillowcases and sheets to protectors and toppers under the frame using under-the-bed boxes or baskets.

For a more sophisticated solution, you might consider investing in a new bed frame with built-in storage. From Ottoman beds to frames with pull-out drawers, there are plenty of stylish frames with additional storage for bedding.

6. Take advantage of the space at the top of your wardrobe

The wardrobe is typically one of the most cluttered spaces in a home. However, this piece of furniture offers one of the most convenient places to store clean bedding, especially out-of-season items like duvets and pillows reserved for the colder winter months.

You can keep bedding in the space at the top of your wardrobe in vacuum-sealed bags, plastic storage containers, or by creating a “bed in a bag.” With a complete set of clean sheets, fold all the items, excluding one pillowcase, into a rectangular shape. Slide this stack into the excluded pillowcase and store it as a set in any available wardrobe space.
